I got his maple from Mark(Tarhead) - again thanks Mark - and I was wondering what you guys would suggest using to get this grain to "pop"

Phillip, quilted maple looks GREAT dyed and sanded back with an oil finish. I would suggest a brown dye for this piece. Very nice job on the sawing!!

That's pretty cool! I wondered what you were doing.

If you have some amber or garnet shellac try some on a test piece sanded to 120, let it dry and sand it back to 150 leaving residual in the dark areas. Repeat a few times and finish with BLO or Seal a Cell. The curl will soak up the shellac like a sponge.

I also like to use a Transtint yellow dye, sand lightly w/150, then Transtint brown mahogany dye, sand lightly with 150, then wipe on Seal a Cell. It'll end up darker in the dark parts and lighter in the light parts than just amber or garnet shellac and no blotchiness like oil stain would do.
