Yea, a split top bench can be handy occasionally, but most of the time, it just covers the top of my tool tray with sawdust and small things I drop.
So, this may be SOP, but I made a simple drop in to close it up, and can flip it to be a plane stop. Gave my newly refurbed #7 a good workout. Love that thing.
I have a little rod I use to pop out bench dogs and can use it to pop the insert out.
Yea, need to cut it down to about 1/2 inch for planeing.
