Good morning all,

After reading this forum for a few days, looking at the reviews, and hearing
what some had to say, I took the plunge and purchased the Freud dado
500 series.

I had been having trouble getting my boxes square. After researching here,
I discovered that my dado set was not cutting a square bottom. It was
leaving an ever so slightly convex bottom. The result of this was the ends
and sides would not be parallel. Very frustrating. :BangHead:

The new Freud dado set has not been tried by me yet but I will give you
my results when I use it for the first time.

Check out my shop built drill press table. I have a fence for it but it was
left off for the photo's. The T-tracks come in handy for clamping parts
to the table.

Y'all have a good day,

Woodrat

Nice looking table ... I need one of those!

As for the 508, I'm in the market for it too. Wish I could find a better deal ... where did you get yours? I saw it at the show for $180, but even that seems a bit high (or maybe I am).

I'm torn between the Ridge Carbide set and the Freud set. I have to tell you that I'm leaning towards the Freud after seeing it at the show. It's the new "Ice" (or something) finish and included plastic case that really lean me that way.

Can't wait to hear your feedback.

To use my very best English, I would say my Freud SD-508 has me Gob-Smacked! It is simply Brilliant!

Archie,

Nice drill press table... but you have to show us a photo of the dado set so we can properly, in the tradition of the NCWW website, congratulate you on your new toy... :-D

woodrat: I am looking at the Freud dado sets What is the difference between the 600 and 500 series? 600 looks pretty sweet. Still researching, thus I will keep my eye on your review.

cc4digital: The Freud 600 series is the "dial-a-width" type that does not
have to be taken off the arbor to adjust. From what I can tell, just loosen
arbor nut and turn an adjusting ring to make the dado slot bigger/smaller.
This is after it has been set up according to the directions.

The 500 series has to have shims added in order to make any width
adjustments.

I'm gonna start a new project today and will have a chance to use my new
toy. I'll post a review in the appropriate section.

Thanks,

Woodrat

Just one piece of info on the SD608 -- the hubs on the outside may restrict how big a dado you can cut due to arbor length limits -- I can cut up to 13/16" on my Grizzly cabinet saw with my SD508 without problems. You may want to check that for your saw before you plop down the extra bucks for the 608. Just my $0.02

I have a Ridgid 3650 table saw. On a another forum (the Ridgid site), it was posted that the SD608 is too wide to fit the arbor on my saw. A 13/16" stacked dado works fine (just use the nut and not the shoulder washer as you do with a blade.)
Hey Santa, remember that number: "SD508". I promise I'll do good if you give me good tools!!:-D

Rob,

That is a good point to keep in mind when deciding between the SD500 and the SD600 series. The dial hub uses 7/32" of the arbor length so for some saws it may not be possible to acheive dado widths up to the advertised max.
