I found some freshly cut magnolia this morn....about as large a trunk as Ive seen here. It was already cut into sizes I could manage to pick up. Is there any special care for it? I will split it tomorrow and anchor seal the ends. Is it a good turning wood ? Ill maybe get some pics later once it is split.

A couple of my students turned some and it looked very good, but it smells weird when turned and bothers me for this reason.

Magnolia should be a fine to turn, not toxic, and is a colorful wood, although it contains a lot of water when green. Its dry weight is almost half of its wet weight, making it moisture content close to 50% while other woods are closer to 30%. There are couple of other woods that also have high moisture contents; like western hemlock and black locust.
