Hi All,

One of our daughters decided on an impulse buy last night. She came home with a new 27" flat screen television. "Dad. I got a great deal, but I couldn't afford a stand to put it on.:crybaby2: Please daddy. Will you build me one!! Please! Pretty Please!"

Well....I guess I have been commissioned!! I am such a pushover!

I have been looking around trying to find a plan that I could either use or get some ideas from. (I prefer not to use MDF and would be receptive in something in red oak. Maybe even try out using my new PC 4112 on some through dovetails.:) )

Does anyone out there have a idea as to a good source for a television stand plan? Would need to be pretty strong, as this sucker is not light? Not a plasma by any stretch! Heck, my own TV isn't that big!

Any ideas would be most welcome!

Thanks,

Wayne

Wow Wayne, that should be an easy thing to design yourself. I am thinking a nice low cabinet wider than tall with a shelf or two to fit other components. Then pick the furniture style that will fit in their house and use those details. 1,2,3 a custom designed, handbuilt furniture piece. Way better than anything that could be bought. My .02, Dave:)

You're right DaveO!

What ever happened to pne boards and cinder blocks like I had in my 1st apartment, eh?:eusa_danc :eusa_danc :eusa_danc Weren't too pretty, but supported all of that high end audio gear!! (Ya right!) Oh well, I could blast enuff to get the neighbors on edge!

Maybe I can just go with something simple and strong on my own. Just fishing from simple ideas that I hadn't thought of.

Thanks for the respnse. (By the way, I think that I missed when your planned knee surgery was?)

Later...... And thanks again and take care!

Wayne, I'm zero help on plans, but I know Woodworker Supply carries a lot of mounting hardware for TVs, computers, etc. So if you need a swivel base or sturdy pull outs, drop by their website.

I haven't got plans, but I built a stand a few years ago with a curved front out of oak. Has space for VCR and stereo components. Made it a curved front just for something different. All solid oak and the curved parts were pretty easy to do.

Going along the lines of design it for your needs, I made this one (missing the top in this pic), the thing i wanted you to note were the full depth DVD drawers at the bottom, pretty much free space anyway.
I foolishly thought that those would be enough, silly me...lol
Take care
Gary

I know the value of building something yourself, I love it myself, but I'll make this offer anyway...

Before we put our TV here:

We had it on this:

It's the gray thing in the picture. The picture is the back. It is made to fit a 32" Sony TV. If it'll work for you. You can have it. Rather, your daughter can have it. But if you want to build it, you can do that too.

Wow Gary!

I think that would too much. Great job though. That looks extremely nice!!!!!!! If I would construct something for my own (Family room/living room) I would certainly consider something like that! Don't know that a 19 YO would appreciate something this well constructed. You did an awesome job on that one! (I bought a walnut veneered piece from Audio Advice in Raleigh a few years back and I would rank yours as a perfect match as far as workmanship!)

Thanks for your suggestions!

hi wayne

when you say a flat screen, do you mean an LCD or plasma or a tv with a flat front over the typical curved tube? I build yacht interiors and due to the boats rough sea conditions we cant use the standard LCD stands which come with the units so i end up not using them and bolting the LCDs to the walls. If this is what you need I can see what we have left over from the last boats.

Dennis,

It is just a flat screen over a curved tube. The thing weighs about 80 pounds! (My daughter knows better than to buy an LCD or plazma before her old man!!! :slap: ....I would hope anyway!)

Thanks very much for the offer, though. I will probably just go with something out of a sheet of oak ply and an oak faceframe. Really just a box with a couple of shelves. I will be trying to keep it pretty simple.

(Thanks to you too Roger. I have bought things from Woodworkers Supply in the past and have very good luck with their selection and service!)

Thanks again All,

Wayne

I don't have a plan to offer, but I'll toss in my 2 cents worth anyway. Make sure you leave enough space in the cabinet / on the shelves to let the electronic stuff breath. Anything that has vent holes on it needs at least a couple of inches clearance. Even with clearance above a VCR, DVD player, etc, make sure air can flow through the unit / cabinet.

... and design some raceways / channels into it so you can hide all the wires.

Peace,
Ray

Another great looking design David. I really like the looks and style of all the contemporary pieces you have built. Even your beer mats are first class.:icon_thum

Great design David! How are the legs joined to the shelf slabs? And, do yu think that the top shelf would support 80-100ibs with minimal sag?

Thanks for the ideas!!!

The latest issue of the American woodworker has a plan

for a bookcase entertainment center that might be what you are looking for. It is built in sections so you could build just the base or the whole thing depending on your preference.

Good Luck

Wayne,

Here's a picture of an entertainment center that I just finished a few weeks ago. This is assuming my first attempt to post a picture will work.
