I saw this in a magazine and after just building a cabinet and I had to make it. Finally used it this week, made a huge difference drilling pocket holes in cabinet sides. Much more stable. Even has screw storage. I'm sorry, I do not remember the name of the magazine. They used solid boards, I had some scrap melamine so used that for the top.

Now that's a good idea for drilling pocket screw holes in wide panels.

Is the K3 removable from the base plate?

Very nice Rob. :eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap Now if they'll start making Kreg jigs out of metal so I stop drilling holes through mine. :gar-La;

Yeah, an all metal jig would be nice.

FYI, they have discontinued the K3. No more front mounted locking lever. Bummer. :wsad:

No front locking clamp? ***?

Looking at the Kreg web site it appears they have moved the clamp handle to the back to allow room for the jig to be clamped to the bench top at the front. I guess this is supposed to be more convenient than screwing the jig to a board which you clamp to the bench top :eusa_thin

That front mounted locking lever was one of the main reasons I went with the K3 model instead of the K4. It really surprises me that they have discontinued that model.

I actually sent an email asking about it. This is the response I got:

Mark,

The K3 was discontinued in Nov. It is however still available through some dealers and I believe through Amazon.com if you are interested in purchasing one.

Thank you,

:rotflm: I did this the very first time I used mine. :rotflm:

Nice job Rob. I might have to set my jig into one of these as well.

That is a good idea, one I'll have to keep in mind.

BTW I have not drilled into my K-3, well not since the last time I used it that is.

That strikes me as not too smart. I wouldn't use the rear lever if they gave it to me, and junquecol modified his to front lever. I'm just glad I got mine before they got stupid! Used it today, in fact.

Kreg jigs were originally metal. An Amish friend of mine, who has a cabinet shop, was shocked when he saw my new Kreg jig, when I bought it, because it was plastic. I had watched him use his, which was all metal. This was about 10+ years ago. I like Kreg products, but I think the quality of the pocket hole jig has gone down.:thumbs_do:tongue2:

Everything has a price point, and unfortunately for Kreg the front clamp was just to expensive to produce. Rear clamp uses a standard toggle clamp, which retails for about $10. I had this conversation with Todd Sommerfeld last August at IWF in Atlanta. Even offerd him how to do front clamp much cheaper, but it's not in the big picture right now.

Nice - I can see the advantage when working with large panels. By the way, where is a good source of melamine in Piedmont NC?

It would seem to me that Kreg is having a hard time deciding where to put the locking lever.:dontknow:

I have Kreg K2000 kit that bought about six years ago or so and it has the lever in the rear.

They come out with the K3 and move it to the front. :icon_thum:icon_thum

Then they go and discontinue the K3 and come out with the K4 with the locking lever back to the rear!!????:icon_scra

Having the lever in the rear is an inconvenience, but I rarely use it on really large panels anyway. (The K2000 came with a couple of small clamp on pocket hole guides that I can turn to in a pinch.)

What really burned me, was the inability to add the new Kreg dust collection fitting to my jig!:gar-Cr
I EMailed Kreg about a retrofit and they sent me a scribbled drawing showing the addition of a couple of pieces of PVC attached to the base and called it "the retrofit".:BangHead: (The DC spigot available for the K3 won't fit the K2000.)

Just thought I would share this design flip-flop I have noticed.

Still a great jig and a joy to use though!!!:wsmile:

I have one of the K2 kreg jigs, they were sold until about 3 years ago. The clamp is on the rear and I've had no problems with it. The funny thing is that I'd swear that I bought it within the last ten years, and I just found out that it came out in the late '80s. I bought mine at a woodworking show when they first came out and weren't advertising yet, the vendor put on a demonstration every 20 minutes and I purchased one based on that demonstration. Time truly does fly.

I wouldn't trade mine for anything:eusa_danc.

I have the 2000 I think. The clamp in the rear has never been an issue for me. I have done some large panels and the clamp in the rear is a minor nuisance at best. I ak-choo-ly prefer it back there out of the way.:icon_thum so far as clamping to the bench I simply added a strip of wood to the bottom and use it to clamp it in my vise. Dust collection for a Kreg jig?????? common guys. I have a bench brush......:wink_smil
