Hello friends,
I have the stock milled up for my first run of handmade hollows and rounds. I just want to get some sizes/pics of others that people have. If i could get size's of the plane, how far the mouth is back from the front edge, throat angles. That is if you have time friends, be blessed always!

Michael -

You might have already done this, but I'd read this before you start:

http://www.planemaker.com/articles.html (the articles specifically aimed at molding planes, though all of them are good to read).

You definitely want to read this before you start:

http://www.lie-nielsen.com/pdf/Sizes_of_Hollows_and_Rounds.pdf

Finally, I'd highly encourage you to spend the $40 for the C&W video from Lie Nielsen titled "Making Traditional Side Escapement Planes". Besides a heck of a lot of useful advice, there's a layout diagram on the disc in pdf format.

David,
Thanks for the info, that is a great video from LN, I enjoyed watching it. I have a good idea though after seeing one of the planes here in Germany. I have been able to inspect an old Round molding plane and it has laminated pieces that make up the body. If I follow this design I wont have to worry about drilling angles and using floats. Here is a design that I have come up with, the different colors depict the lamination pieces. I know how some traditional plane makers do not like laminated planes, but I am looking at a design that will be fast and acurate. The front of the plane show the rounded portion, the back shows the "Raw" stock parts. Hopefully I will be able to get to work on one of these this weekend. Be blessed friends.

Man what was I thinking? :eusa_doh: I swear some people trying to save a couple thousand dollars making their own tools. Maybe I should get a good design made and then sell mine for $2355.00! I would further the deal by going the extra mile and throwing in free shipping! LOL

Because you'd be waiting on them for years. The backlog is that long.

Micheal - laminated planes will work just fine, so long as they don't suffer wild swings in humidity. I'd still recommend a couple of floats - specifically a bed float and a side float. I suspect you'll find that while lamination takes a lot of work out of the process, the backs of irons are still irregular enough that fitting by blacking the back, putting it in the plane, removing it, and cutting down the high spots will be necessary.

BTW, Michael - Do you have the dimensions you need? I've a couple of different sets of these - an unused one by Varvill & Sons, and a nearly unused set by Hields of Nottingham - both late 19th/early 20th century UK makers. I will be happy to measure specific attributes if you need it.

One comment about these planes versus the ones illustrated in the pdfs on the Clark and Williams video - C&W makes late 18th century British style planes. The differences are subtle unless you're a plane collector, in which case they look glaring. No disrespect to Larry Williams, but other than looks, I really don't see much difference in use.
