I'm a new member. My name is Hank Knight. I live in Columbia, SC, and I've been a long time lurker here. I like the people and the work I've seen, so I decided to take the plunge and sign up. I appreciate your giving outlanders the opportunity to join this forum.
I've been an amateur woodworker most of my life. I'm pretty much self taught, but In the last few years I've taken a couple of workshop courses at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine. Other than that I've had no formal training. What I know I learned from reading and from trial and error - mostly error. I do flat work with both hand and power tools in my basement shop. I own a lathe but I am only marginally competent with it. Until I discovered woodworking forums on the Internet several years ago, my woodworking was a solitary avocation. The Internet has opened many new avenues of interest for me and has given me the opportunity to meet many woodworkers with interests akin to mine, for all of which I am grateful. I plan to retire next July so I can spend much more of my time in my shop. Meanwhile, I look forward to getting to know you and enjoying your forum.
