Finally finished my new set of main speakers. I got the drivers and crossovers as a package from madisound and built the speaker boxes to their specs. They are the Zaph 2-way MTM design. The actual enclosed speaker box is 18.5" x 8" x 12.5". I just "extended" them to 36" rather than build stands to match my listening ear height. The speaker boxes are 3/4" mdf, glued butt joints w/a cherry veneer. I've only ironed on veneer in the past, but this time around I used titebond's cold press glue and pressed it on w/ a platen and cauls/ clamps. Very simple to do and very effective. The finish is garnet shellac followed by wipe-on poly and then waxed. I also made speaker grills (bottome left of photo) for them in case the younglings were tempted to poke the drivers, although i prefer the look of the uncovered speakers.

The best part was when I plugged them in, my wife commented on the clarity of the speakers and the overall richness of the sound compared to my old ones. :icon_cheers

Looks like you all are waiting on me now to complete.... errr start my speakers!

well done on the cabinet, it looks perfect and if your wife digs it then even better! I can't see what you used for feet...small spikes or something different?

3/4" dowel cut in ~1/2" lengths (4 per speaker), drilled/counterbored and screwed into place. I also glued some felt on the bottom. I wasn't so worried about floor resonance effects b/c the speaker cab is 18" above the floor w/ several layer of mdf in between, but I was concerned that the veneer or mdf may get damaged from a spill or something, so I wanted some clearance.

Salem's and your posts re-invigorated me to get started on this project, so now it's your turn! :D

Very nice work there, Sam!:icon_thum

They sound great just looking at them. :)

Very professional looking job and you know they are just not store bought "stickyback paper veneer".

Nice -what size and kind are the actual speakers - they look to be aluminum coned

The mids are a 5" aluminum coned drivers from Zaph audio. Here's the link:

The tweeters are 1" titanium domed from Vifa

Here's the speaker kit w/ crossovers etc.:
