Birthday Gloat

My lovely wife bought me a Flexcut starter set for my Birthday. (as well as a a veritas crosscut saw and rosewood marking gauge) I finally finished my first carving. I could not believe how much fun and relaxing carving is. I have already borrowed some books from the Library, signed up for Mary May's website, and am itching to carve some more.


My first carving. Needs some additional cleanup, but I was very pleased with how it turned out.

Great looking first effort.

Another pay site that is very good with lots of tutorials, both relief and in-the-round is Chris Pye's Video site. About $10/month but there are over 100 videos on everything from selecting tools to sharpening to carving various types of things. Like Mary, Chris uses more traditional (non-flexcut) carving tools, but technique is technique. I have learned a lot from the site.

She's already asking for Santas, gnomes, horses... I think I better jump on learning to do some in the round carving.
