    Union # 8 hand plane

Anybody end up picking that plane up? I have been slowly acquiring a set of pre-Stanley Unions (have a raw #6 and a totally refurbed #7) but don't have a #8, yet.

    Very old hand plane

I'm interested. What are you looking to exchange it for?

Advice requested for a hand plane

I'd never ebayed anything either prior to buying my first hand plane (which incidentally was a Sargent #6 equivalent, a 418 ). Its no different from buying at any other auction, i.e. if you do your research ahead of time, you are less likely to get shagged. Patrick Leach's site and the Stanley...

Advice requested for a hand plane

I personally prefer the 18" (#6) sized metal bench planes for general work. The additional weight over a jack means that the plane does not get stuck on knots and grain changes and allows you to continue to work even with a mildly dull blade. In addition, for the smaller projects that I tend to...

    Stanley #4 from eBay

It's made of tigerwood, a variety of rosewood they had on sale at my local Rockler. It may be the same as goncalo alves. The handle was really not hard to make once you know the process and have a few specific tools. I posted a few details of construction on woodnet. BTW, the grain probably...

    Stanley #4 from eBay

Why not just make your own replacement?

    Craftsman Plane Cutter

That may be one of the old disposable blade planes, in which case the blade isn't meant to be sharpened. Can you provide a picture?

Is this plane a good deal?

I fully rebuilt it and bought a new blade/chipbreaker. It arrived off eBay in unusable condition with a cracked handle (taped together), heavily rusted sole, and no jappaning. This is my third full rebuild and I'm continuing to refine the process.

Is this plane a good deal?

Those guys (rarebear, WaltQ, Timberwolf) do have excellent stuff. I have been rebuilding/refinishing a bunch of planes since last summer for fun (post on Woodnet under login "sculpin"). Here's my latest junk-to-gem Stanley type 14 #4 1/2:

Is this plane a good deal?

I believe the Indian factory which makes the Anant, Groz, and HF "Windsor Design" planes inherited Record Plane's tooling when it went under and continues to use the same on these planes. If you look closely at them, they appear to have identical designs to Stanley type 20's and beyond. I bought...

rehab or display trashed type 4 No 7

You're probably right. I just hate to rip apart a 130 year old plane. Maybe I will refinish it. Other than the two rat bites out of the right cheek, it might look good on a mantle.

rehab or display trashed type 4 No 7

Howdy, After seeing Insomniac's post in the Buy and Sell forum I decided to take a gallery opinion on what to do with an old type 4 No 7 I got off ebay. I purchased this guy fairly blindly (single small grainy pic in poor light) off ebay for $20 a while ago. It arrived with the worst...
