I received the latest issue of ShopNotes, Issue 96, two days ago. On the back cover is a note saying that the Season Premiere of Woodsmith Shop is coming in 2008. "Cool" I think, I like WWing shows. So I follow the link, http://www.woodsmithshop.com, to learn more. Apparently it is going to be shown on Iowa Public Television. Limited audience if you ask me. Maybe we should write to our local TV providers requesting that they carry it. (TWC, Dish Direct, etc.)

I saw this posted at SMC a couple of weeks ago and someone there saw a press release that said they were going to try and go national with the program I believe.

Hello North Carolina Woodworkers,
My name is Doug Hicks and I am Executive Editor with Woodsmith and ShopNotes magazines, developer/producer of "The Woodsmith Shop" TV show, and a cast member on the show. I've been following this thread and thought I could bring a little more light into what we're up to here at the Woodsmith Shop.

Yes, we have produced the first season (13 episodes) of a brand new television show that is unlike anything else currently on the air. It's focused on woodworking techniques, tips, and tools more than projects. Our feeling is that if you learn the technques, you can apply them on any project you want.

Since our publishing company is based in Iowa, the show is coproduced by Iowa Public Television. So we started out the show by broadcasting it here in Iowa starting October 5 and 6. (We got a great position right after Norm and before This Old House!) The response from those who have seen it has been great.

Now our goal is to get the show broadcast all over the country (including North Carolina!). Public television is a little different than commercial television. Each local station decides what to carry and when it will be broadcast. Starting December 8th, each of the stations will be able to download "The Woodsmith Shop" off the satellite (through NETA, that's our distributor) and show it whenever they want.

In the next week or so we will be sending a packet of information about the show to all of the programmers at every station. I suspect that many of them will be deciding shortly what to feature after the first of the year. Here's where each of you can play a part. If you would like to see the show, contact your local public television station. For most of you I believe that would be UNC-TV. Contact information is available at: http://www.unctv.org/aboutus/contactus.html

We have been told that if a local station hears from even a small number of people, they might consider a new show. So it is important that you contact the station if you are interested and give them your thoughts.

If you would like to find out more about the show, go to www.WoodsmithShop.com. If you click on any of Episodes 101-104, you can now download free articles and project plans that we've featured on the show (the rest will be added as the shows come on the air here in Iowa). And you can click on a short video intro. to Episodes 101-106 to get a little sense for the show. Just click on an episode and then the photo and the video should start.

We've also received some questions about whether it will be available on DVD. Somewhere down the line we might do that, but our goal and energy right now is to get as many public television stations to carry it as possible.

If you've got other questions or suggestions about the show, please let me know either on this thread or email me at dhicks@augusthome.com

P.S. I love North Carolina. My folks live up in the mountains near Brevard. As a matter of fact, I am flying down to Asheville tomorrow morning to spend some time with them. Hopefully the leaves will still be in their glory. (And maybe some of you remember that I was down to speak to the Triangle Woodworkers Guild in Cary in April 1996. That was a great group.)

Thanks for the information and welcome Doug!!! We're glad you stopped by and hope to hear from you often.

My Father-in-law has a place in Brevard. It's a beautiful area and we hope to move up that way from Charlotte someday.

Thanks again,

Hello Doug and welcome to NCWW! Glad you found us and I hope we are able to get the show broadcast down here. The Woodwright's Shop has a few of their shows available on line. Maybe that would be a possibility for you as well! Please stay in touch and keep us updated!

I started this thread. When I went back to it today, I saw the most recent responses and was puzzled by everyone welcoming me when I have been a member for over a year. Then I saw Doug Hicks reply and figured it out. :BangHead: Some days I am slower than others and today is one of my slowest.

Doug

P.S. I sent UNC-TV a request to air the show.

Hey, Doug Robinson:
Thanks for contacting UNC. And, by the way, I like your first name.

We'd welcome this new show to Public TV in NC and hope that many of our members let WUNC and others (like SCETV) know about its availability in the near future. Thanks for the posts to both Dougs! In case others didn't recognize the producer, August Home publishes Woodsmith and ShopNotes.

Doug,
Thank you so much for taking the time to give us some insight on this topic. I am interested how you came across this website. We really hope that you can find the time to keep us informed on this.

I wonder if we could setup some form of online petition here that people can express interest in the show. Then we could forward that 'link' or 'petition' to the public TV stations as a group...could have a greater impact...:eusa_thin

I'll chat with Steve and Monty at the Klingspor show tomorrow to see what they think.

Regards,
Chris

I take both magazines and enjoy them both. How about a poll on this site and we could send the results to unctv?

A poll may help, but I'd suggest we all send a personal request to UNCTV. I've already sent a request!

Guys and Girls, it sounds like we have to make this wheel squeak. If they get enough requests I am sure they will look at it further. I think a letter/email campaign is in order there. I just sent my email.

I sent them a note too, but there is one thing that really talks when it comes to "public" TV. That is MONEY.Now I like to support them, but there are many of us I'm sure that watch the shows and don't send a pledge, so get the wallet out and pledge some money to the effort, as well as a request for the program, and you'd likely see things change quicker. Moneygrease will lube our squeaky wheel quite well.

Best of luck in a losing battle. The staff at UNC Public TV could care less about woodworking shows. Think about it- Norm used to come on on late Saturday afternoon, and again on Sunday morning, just before TOH. Now he is in the middle of Saturday afternoon, when most of us are either in the yard, or in the shop. They carry Underhill as the flagship station, but all other sations pay them for this program. Ever remember seeing either The Router Workshop, or Scott Phillips program on UNC? TWA used to do a session at the "beg a thon", but no more as they carry minimal woodworking programs. They basically want free labor, but give nothing in response. When was the last time you watched the fat guy doing the grilling? They have sponsers willing to commit $$$$ to have that program on. How many programs can our local WW companies sponser?

I too sent a note to WUNC.

BTW - they have been showing the router workshop and all the guys from New England Thursdays on WUNC-ED, channel 203 on Time Warner cable.
