jeff...

That's the problem with wood working. You see a nice piece of lumber it and something comes over you that says, "wouldn't I look nice as a _______"

Earl,

I agree. Everybody within driving distance should make the pilgramage to Wall Lumber. The folks there are terrific. They are very knowledgable. The prices are GREAT. I went there for a smattering of Walnut and maybe some cherry. I came away with those plus a smattering of bloodwood and canary.

Jeff,

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who hears those voices...8-O

Where is wall lumber? I have not heard of it. (this should not be a surprise) I see the guy on the diy channel using all kinds of different types of wood. He used some beautiful wood on the inlay he did on a cherry hall table. How should I store the wood when not using? I use mostly pine because of its price, but it warps if not used quickly.:eusa_thin Dont want to waste precious wood.:slap:

Wow, that's a lot of questions. Please start up another thread with your inquiries so that the valuable information given by this group isn't lost in an unrelated thread. Thanks!!!!

Has anyone bought some of there "Ash, Cherry, Red Oak, White Oak and Walnut Shorts"http://walllumber.com/sho.asp

Plan on making a trip up there friday before i go to work.
Like knots and cracks at the end of the boards?
I am still confused by the grading of boards.

Do you need to call them before you go about these shorts or just show up?

John you can buy the shorts in rough or planed stock. They always keep piles of each species bundled ready for the taking. You really can't lay out all the boards to look at them being they are pre bundled but I have never bought any bad lumber from Steve. I have actually picked up some excellent cherry and walnut from the shorts. All the guys that work at Walls are very friendly and helpful. Good luck with your trip and be sure to let us know what you came back with. Hope this helps.

I have purchased quite a bit of lumber from Wall lumber, Red Oak, Walnut and cherry. I am more than satisfied with the Quality of the product they sell. Their one common is much better than some select from some of the local suppliers in my areas. Price is right, quality is great and the folks there are very friendly and helpful.

I made the trip from SC to him a few months ago. I agree that the people are both knowledgable and friendly. Came away with 2 of his specials 100bf mahogany and 100bf of walnut and could not have been happier (unless I could have bought more).

I believe it's well worth the drive.

If everything goes alright friday, I am going to go up there and pick up a bundle or two and some poplar.

Hopefully i can get some shorts that are 8" wide in the bundles.

If you want it already surface is already done or do you need to wait for it to be done?

Last time I was there, they had rough and surfaced bundles in the bins. So unless you are buying several bundles or they just sold some, you won't need to wait. I'd recommend that you call them before driving up there.

John the cherry shorts I bought were good quality. I also bought walnut, hard and soft maple and some poplar.

Give yourself enough time to look around some.

So they have more types of shorts than Ash, Cherry, Red Oak, White Oak and Walnut?

i am going to leave my house around 1 and drive up there. Told them i going to be late a couple hrs.

I couldn't figure a better way to burn my vac/pers hrs that i have to use by the end of sept.

John,

I agree. Other than making something out of the wood you buy from them, going there and shopping is as good a way as any to spend your vac / pers time.

Plan on spending some extra time there. Yes you can do well in the "bundles" department, but Wall has more sizes and types and varieties than you'll ever figure what to do with... everything from your standard furniture hardwoods to some beautiful exotics. GREAT place to shop.

Here some pictures of the RED OAK SHORTS.

2 bundles of red oak shorts. a few of the boards had some bad checks in them, but i can work around them.
Sizes range from 5"-10" and uptoo 33" long i think.
also picked up 10 bdft of the 1C poplar. and had it s2s. If i would of thought more about it i should of just got a bundle of walnut shorts instead of the poplar.
