That's the Microplane 3" rasp set. They also make an 8", but I wanted the detail set. They claim to be 10 times faster than a surform. I think that may be stretching it, but they are sharp and quick cutting. There are 3 profiles in levels of coarseness - coarse and fine. I don't consider either to be coarse; maybe the 8" set has truly course ones. That is not a complaint; I did not get these for removing massive amounts of wood, but for shaping and cleaning up after tools that remove massive amounts. The fine ones leave a surface like sanding. The set came with 2 handles and the blades are easy to change. I am quite pleased with these.

I have some and I do like them. Used one the other day (square) and it helped save me from re-doing a part.

We have some of their products made for the kitchen and they are the best graters ever. I wondered how well their wood working products would do. Have you used them on any hardwood yet? Have you seen any comparison between the micro planes with Nicholson or Auroiu (SP?) rasps? The metal working file I have been using are OK but very slooooow.

Thanks,
Lee

Does hickory count as hard? :)

I used them a lot yesterday shaping the handle area on a bow. They cut very fast for the first few seconds but they clog and slow. I just have to keep that clear and they outpace just about any hand tool I have. But the rasp I have to compare it with is the Nicholson Woodcrafter (which I think is made by Cooper Tools in Apex, BTW) which is not in the same class as their better rasps or the ones from that company I can't spell either. One big difference is that the "blades" pop in and out and are consumables. How long they last will be a factor.

Nice gift Andy, I have used the microplane ROS discs and have wondered about their hand tools. Thanks for sharing your experience with them. :wsmile:
