As a fledgling turner, I am always collecting promising looking logs when I see them on the side of the road. My problem is turning them into blanks. I dislike ripping logs with a chainsaw, so I decided to give the Carter Accuright Log Mill a try. So far I love it! It holds the log firm even if the ends aren't square (they never are!) and it lets me cut any width/thickness "board" or blank from the log. My only gripe would be that it can only handle a 24" long log, but I guess if it was much longer it would be too difficult to wrestle onto the bandsaw table... Here are some pics:
