Fed,

The piece is great. Could you provide a little more of an explanation on "woodcore" - what do you mean by wood staves - is that the substrate for the veneer? What kind of wood do you use for the wood staves?

Thanks,

Bill

hi bill.
woodcore is just what it says. its wood boards glued up to make the sheet and veneered with the wood of choice. plywood has alternating layers of veneer this doesnt. the core wood is soft wood that is quite stable. the pieces that make up the core are [without going to look] around 1 3/4 wide and slightly thinner than the finished product. I got it at jacksons in fuquay. the finished product is also the corect size meaning 1/2" is 1/2" 3/4" is 3/4" ect.... this being all wood running it the same direction makes it machine just like real wood. it doesnt have the tendancy to tear out when jointed and is much better on the jointer knives. plywood doesnt joint well at all. on a piece like this using plywood I would band the edges before jointing. with this stuff there is no need to do that. you cut and glue as you would with real wood. the core is a different color so you cant leave edges exposed but you can gat perfect joined edges without the grain and color changes you would get from banding and then jointing. I dont have a pic [wish I did] it would make it much easier to explain.:gar-Bi

Thanks Fred - it may be a good solution for the base of a desk I am making. I am guessing that it is at least as strong as plywood and it sounds like a better product for joining together sides or installing a hinge.

Bill

I realy like it! it's a little pricey. 15-20% more than plywood.:sad11: but much nicer to work with and probably would work better with screws too.I'm not sure what flavors are available though.:icon_scra you might check with robin at jacksons. they are listed here someplace as a supplier.

WOW Fred!!!:icon_thum:icon_thum:icon_thum

I would be afraid to place anything on top of or in it for fear of scratching it!!!! :nah: That is one superb piece of furniture.:eusa_danc:eusa_danc:eusa_danc Hope that what he/she places in it/on it warrants this superb workmanship.

Very fine job indeed!:wsmile::wsmile::wsmile:

Fred, that came out real nice! The wood is beautiful. Are there going to be any knobs on the doors?

there will be knobs but the customer has not picked them out yet. heaven only knows what they will be!:swoon: all his taste is in his mouth!:rotflm: I'll go by his house and put them on next week. he needs some end tables and a computer stand as well so I will be going by there to get measurements. he doesnt want a coffee table but i'm guessing he is gonna get one!:eusa_danc I know his better half...:gar-La;

Wow Fred. :eusa_clap Double wow :eusa_clap :eusa_clap. With a stand like that, it don't matter what's on TV, you can just admire the wood instead. The only thing I don't like about it is that it isn't in my house :)

Everybody else has said it already Fred, but that really does look like a great job, fantastic wood too. Maybe those push to open magnetic catches would be nice on the doors to avoid spoiling the clean look with knobs??
