Re: New Shop, sort of... first wall.. Photo Update 10/5

I guess I got interrupted and didn't get the picture posted.

Anyway, it seems like the first wall took forever and the second is taking just as long. I can't wait to get to a wall that is just a wall.

The basement is framed

This is looking toward the garage end of the basement, a garage door and man-door. The garage will be partitioned off for fire code reasons.

This is the view from the shop end of the basement looking out the windows onto the back yard, creekside.

From the neighbors back yard.

Floor Trusses.. Photo Update 10/30

We got the floor trusses delivered yesterday and installed today. I got one person to help me and rented a scissor lift to move the trusses around the basement and set them in place. It worked great.
Picture_0771.jpg

First trusses set at 9:30 am. That's not me in the lift.
Picture_079.jpg

Last truss set at 3:06. Not too bad for a rookie and one helper.
Picture_080.jpg

No walls, columns or posts in the basement. Total free form. The same is true on the main level.

How high are the ceilings going to be in the shop??

8 feet, totally clear. Couldn't really afford anything higher, didn't want to dig deeper, didn't want to climb more stairs, didn't want the house higher, lots of reasons.

I built a shop years ago with 8' ceilings, being limited by code to overall height of the building and hated it when I was finished because I couldn't lift a piece of plywood straight up. I had all of my DC piping in the ceiling as well as compressed air, but lighting had to be below the beams to eliminate shadows and it drove me nuts.

The shop looks great.

Man o Man, am I lucky

My son spent some of his block leave after returning from Iraq with us and helped me with the house. We got the OSB on the basement Monday, and got rained out on Tuesday.

Picture_084.jpg

Wednesday morning, I fell through the trusses and made a perfect landing on the concrete below. A 10 foot fall. I am battered and bruised all down my right side, from elbow to hip, but nothing broken. I decided we needed help and got some. Two pros kept me busy with the nail gun and we finished the floor this morning.

I'm glad you didn't break anything, that could've been one BAD fall!

It's shaping up and looking good!

Well, tell your son I am proud of him twice - once for his service to our country and the second time for helping dad out! Glad to hear you are OK after your little fall! The shop is looking great!

DIY Framing

In case anyone is wondering how an old man like me can frame a house alone, here is the technique...

A couple of cleats fastened to the outside of the house so the wall can be lifted without sliding off the side.
Picture_0991.jpg

Rig up the lifting device, homemade, from 2x4s, pulley and come-a-long.
Picture_100.jpg

Crank it up
Picture_101.jpg

Keep cranking
Picture_102.jpg

Then stand it up, and put on the adjustable brace, plumb it and brace it.
Picture_103.jpg

The adjustable brace is like a screw jack, so one man can adjust the wall plumb.

Three walls up.

Re: New Shop, sort of... Walls.. Photo Update 11/24

I'm curious about your lift. It looks like it is not guyed up (can't see from photos) and relies on the weight of the wall to hold it at an angle. Is the bottom just on a hinge that you screw into the deck? I can't see the pulley, but assume that the come-along cable goes over one at the top and then down to the top plate of the wall you are lifting. I can't see how it does not fall over without guy lines. Can you clarify?
