I'm really glad I found this site. I recently retired from a government job (air traffic control) and have always been interested in woodworking. I guess it started with my great grandfather who could make just about anything. I have 3 knives he made from an old, broken, two-man crosscut saw and my sister has a twin bed he made from cherry on a "man powered" lathe.

My father continued the tradition and really got me interested as a boy. I have some of his and my great grandfather's tools that I really treasure.

Anyway, I have been trying to learn carving and have attempted a few projects, but I hope to become more educated on this site.

Welcome Preston! I think that you'll find NCWW to be a friendly and helpful place. I'll echo the request for pix!

On a side note, if you were based at RDU you probably know Jim Dukeman, my old flight instructor. He worked in FSS for many years.

Yea, I know Jim. I think he's still teaching at Wake Tech. I was at RDU for 30 years.

This is a bowl that I carved from a maple burl. The tree lost it's top in a storm about a year ago and I finally cut it down. It has numerous burls that I have saved and are currently drying although it is pretty dry now. As you can see, it has already begun spalting.

At the NC state fair this year, I met a gentleman who said that he removed the bark by freezing the piece first. I tried it and it was surprisingly easy to remove the bark with a bench knife.

Welcome Preston. Retired ATC huh? Perhaps you knew my brother, Jim Galloway, aka Gapper from the Atlanta airport? Anyway, glad to have you here.

Sorry Dragon, name doesn't ring a bell, but if he worked in Atlanta he was obviously a good controller.

This is a walking stick that I carved for my son the veterinarian. It's made from dogwood with Minwax red oak stain on the carvings.

Welcome aboard, Preston! And thanks for getting right in the spirit with lots of pictures! Any questions, just ask and someone will try to help! I'm an old woodcarver myself so I enjoy seeing what others are doing!
