Cathy wants to try turning antler, I wondered if any of you deer hunters had an antler or a couple of pieces she could have to try. We can meet at the picnic if anyone is able to supply it

Thanks

I don't have any here but my in-laws are all hunters. I think they normally just throw them away but they may have some around. They are coming up from Ga. next week so I will call and ask them. I know they take their limit each season so that should be 18 for the three of them. Yum, yum, venison sausage or backstrap seared and cooked in gravy. I assume they need to be several years old to be fully dried?

I've turned several pens from antler and they've been very nice.

Word of advice though. Antler stinks when being cut and turned!

Spoke with my Dad-in-law. He says he has a rack in the shed (30X100) that he thought he may make into "rack rattle", whatever that is. They are about 10-15 years old per Leonard and he knows he will never use them. He will send 'em up with the MIL and SIS, and niece.
If the ones you get from others are not "cured" let me know.

Stinks is an understatement !! :tongue2: I also wear a mask when working with it :icon_thum Drill your holes s-l-o-w-l-y .......antler burns pretty quicklywhen you're drilling and will crack
I also sand 4 square sides with my belt sander to help with centering and clamping during drilling :icon_thum
