Congratulations Rob on the big 1000 :eusa_clap !!! And quite an appropriate post to hit the big mark.

Looking forward to the meeting next week. As Rob said, the topic of the meeting will be chisels. Chisels are basic and very essential tools to our woodworking and craftsmanship. We'll mainly talk about cabinetmaking type chisels since that's what I'm most familiar with. If any carvers or turners are planning on coming, please bring some of your chisels and talk about those type chisels. Everyone bring some of your chisels for show & tell. The agenda will loosely be as follows:
  • Different types and styles of chisels
  • Manufacturers and sources for quality chisels
  • Show & tell
  • Finding old chisels and restoring them
  • Turning chisel handles
  • Sharpening
If anybody has any suggestions feel free to speak up.

My Best
Randy

Final Bump! Look forward to hearing Randy's talk on Chisels and hope lots of you can make it. We meet at 1:00 PM in the Conference Room (1st floor rear) at the Folk Art Center at Mile Marker 382 on the Blue Ridge Parkway, less than a mile north of the US 70 access point in Asheville. We'll also vote on adopting Bylaws, setting dues and electing a Board of Directors.

See you there -:icon_thum - PM me if you need directions.

Re: June Meeting of WNC Woodworkers Assoc. - Report

A day later and it's about time I made a report! First, I must apologize for the lack of pics -- it really did happen -- but I forgot my camera!

We had 11 people come to the meeting this month, including seven new faces -- John and Cathy Skipper (Stoneskipper and Cskipper) drove up from Forest City, Larry Mallett (LBMallett) rode down the Blue Ridge Parkway on his Harley from Banner Elk and Kevin Beach (KBcrafter) drove in from Waynesville -- Stephen Wilson (StephenNC) from Fairview and Jerry Grant (Purple Thumb) and Bob Catterfield (Bobcatt) both of Asheville joined returning members Randy Osborne (Ozzie-x), Edd Knight (Eddie Joe), Dan Campbell (Dancam) and me for an enjoyable afternoon of wholesome discussion of our favorite Show 'n Tell items and then a very informative discussion on chisels by Randy Osborne. Randy covered most types of chisels, what to look for when checking flea markets or garage sales, repair and rebuilding handles and sharpening techniques. It was a very interesting discussion, as everyone participated with questions, comments and experiences.

Highlights of the Show and Tell session included Bobcatt's interesting baby rattles he had turned on his lathe (filled with very safe popcorn) and Purple Thumb's report on his visit to Lie-Nielsen's store in Maine (along with several very special tools he purchased while there, including a dovetail saw, a draw shave and a model maker's block plane - see http://www.lie-nielsen.com/). He also shared a catalog the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship (http://www.woodschool.org/) school in Rockport ME and another from Thomas Moser's Gallery in Freeport, one of the premier custom furniture makers of our time (http://www.thomasmoser.com/company/company.showrooms.view.php?showroom_id=1).

We discussed our Bylaws a little, but since most had not reviewed them completely, we decided to table their adoption until next meeting. Everyone agreed that they would review the draft we sent out and would be prepared to vote on them at the July meeting. Our next meeting is July 8th. Suggestions for a program would be appreciated!

Sounds like great stuff Rob! Of course, I suggest you have a WNC meeting in RTP. You folks really have something going on . . . and I'm jealous :jealous:
