Has anyone here replaced the infeed roller on a Delta 22-560 (lunchbox) planer? I recently hit a knot while planing some cherry, and it tore a huge gouge out of the foam roller, preventing stock from feeding smoothly. Does anyone know of a source for the rollers other than Delta (~$40)?

Thanks!

Hey Scott,

Well here is my $ 0.02.

What a pain. I sure alot of folks will recommend a new machine, but it looks to be a nice machine so,

I have a couple of thoughts.

1. Try and repair it yourself. Grind or cut out a patch and glue it in. Or maybe you can find a hard rubber in a tube that you could inject and form up against a mould (Plaster?). I know you can get specialty casting compounds in different hardness ratings, the jewelers use them, but I exppect them to be expensive.

2. Check Craigslist for a parts machine. I saw one for sale (a 22-540) for sale up in Asheville on CL. There is a good chance that the mechanicals are the same. Then you would have other spare parts like the cutterhead and gear train

3. Post a request for parts and information on woodnet or something similar. Maybe OWWM.org ( a stretch, but they do have members that use them when the blinds are shut)

4. There are businesses that would rollers. Not sure if there are any in the WS area. I know the knifemakers use them to recover damaged and worn wheels on their grinders.

Hope this helps.

$40 really isn't that bad for an infeed roller. I know of no where else you can get it other than Delta new unless you find a parts machine as suggested. As far as the replacement process, download the parts breakout from Delta if you don't have it and just look it over real well. The biggest thing is to make sure you don't have any parts left over. ;-)

Personally, I wouldn't buy a new machine unless it was something I really wanted/needed and had the cash.
