Mike offered a few alternatives for a demo at the picnic and it seems "the plane, the plane!" is getting the lion's share of the light voting. Some interest was expressed in the current runner up - shaving wood with drawknife and spokeshave. I can bring my shave horse and a few tools and do that, plus add in a step or two previous to that, demoing using a froe and maul to rive small boards (you can also do large ones, but I would use some small half logs I have dried), explaining a little about the process of drying pieces also. My aim is to get blanks for turning or carving, though you can certainly square up boards instead.
