Hey Everyone,

I have come into some money from the Air Force from Moving and am thinking about getting the Grizzly G0698 Lathe with 18" over the bed and 47" between centers 2hp, reversible, 0-1200rpm and 0-3600rpm and built like the PM and jet lathes. I also read somewhere that is was produced in the Jet/PM plant?

But just wanted to hear everyones thoughts on the Grizzly ($1295 +$144 Shipping= $1439)
VS the Jet 16-42 1 1/2HP (#708359) normally 1899.99, on sale for 1581.46 + free shipping?

Grizzly is $142.46 cheaper and 2" over the bed bigger

And the Jet

Lets hear those opinions...Thanks everyone~! :notworthy:

I dont know , I kinda like the looks of the jet.
It looks like they are made in the same plant though
But the jet does look good

I own lathes from both companies, 2 Jet's and 1 Grizzly, none are the mentioned models. So I can't speak to the questioned models. My experience is that Jet is the better of the two brands in lathes. Not necessarily across the board in every tool category. I have found short comings in both brands of lathes. Again in my experience the castings, fit and motors have been better on the Jet's. Be careful making assumptions based on looks. From a distance a Jet 1236 looks like the Harbor Freight. I've owned both and they are not the same. The HF is probably the most bang for the buck but the Jet was the better lathe. Best to look at them side by side and compare. It's kinda hard to do that with Grizzly products. Small differences can be big differences in enjoyment or aggravation. Just my $0.02.

Choice is yours but seems simple to me

The Grizzly and Jet Models mentions are almost identical, but if you look closely at the two models:
The Grizzly is single phase and 2 hp
The Jet is 3-phase and 1.5 hp

Other than that all of the features are almost identical. The Grizzly would be my choice.

Good luck.

The griz actually uses a 3 phase motor the freq drive has a 220volt single phase input.
The jet 1.5 hp has a 3 phase motor also but the freq drive is 115v single phase input
the 2 hp jet freq drive is 220 v input.

The jet will hold it's value better over the long run.

I totally agree with that, but as we all know woodworkers Never sell there tools~! :rotflm:

Seriously, I don't think I would be upgrading, or selling the Grizzly lathe anytime in the future. I mean it's 18" over the bed,:eusa_danc the PM is twice as much money and is only 2 more inches over the bed at 20".

My good friend Charlie, who owns a PM lathe says he hasn't maxed his out at 20" yet, and also says most people can't accomadate such large items. IE You need too much room to display them.

So with 18" over the bed and being 1/3 the price of a PM and about $500+ less than the Jet 2hp. I think it will be a great buy, at least I hoping it will. And I don't think I will out grow it. :icon_scra At least I hope not.:gar-Bi

Thanks for everyone's opinion's,

Matthew

I remember back when I was looking I thought the grizzly listed it's RPMS in ranges that started above 0. The grizzly site states the RPM's at 330-3200 RPM low: 100-1200 RPM. Does that really matter? I have no idea I don't turn big stuff :embaresse Maybe it's just Jet having a better marketing department and there is no real difference?

Just my rather worthless $0.02

Hey Patrick,

I saw the upper rpms too. And thought it didn't go down to 0-1200rpms. But in the manual it says 0-1200 and 0-3600rpms.

So I'm stoked. I'm calling them today~!

Oh Darn~!

Just called Grizzly and asked their customer support if they we having free shipping for 4th of July, they said nope~! Darn it all to heck~!

And then I asked about the RPM confusion...As on the front page it says High 330-3200 and low 100-1200rpms. And the Manual says 0-1200 rpms for the low. Well I was told it is a typo in the manual. So no low speeds below 100rpms...Darn it all to heck.

Any thoughts/opinions now?

Hey Gary,

I'd love to get the Jet, but it's out of my price range, the 1 1/2hp jet is a closer, but is 2" smaller than the Grizzly. The Grizzly can turn 18" bowls and that I like :icon_thum

And I think I saw the price for the PM at $2600, which is a supper deal, but way out of my price range. Another note, is a PM4224 was selling on craigslist here in SLC, UT about a month ago for $2500...But the headstick didn't slide.

Anyway I am still leaning toward the Grizzly, just a little bummed it doesn't go lower than 100rpms. Even thought my HF lathe only goes down to 600rpm....100rpms is quite a bit slower. :gar-Bi I've just heard it's still a little fast to apply finish to bowls and vases. :eusa_doh:

Hey Gary,

After futher thought and finding out that the Grizzley doesn't go lower than 100rpms. I want to apply finish to a turning while on the lathe, I have been told that 100rpms is just to fast, and the Jets 50rpms is much better for that process.

Anyway I have decided, especially after talking to Charlie, that I am going with the Jet 1642 1 1/2hp and will be ordering it tomorrow as the sale says it starts July 2nd thru the 9th.

Thanks for all your help and advice on the two models.

Charlie,

Thanks~! :notworthy: I'm sure glad I held out and read 7 pages on AAW about the Grizzly 18"x47" review, mostly all good, but found out it would go below 100rpms...:eusa_doh: :BangHead: So no thank I said.

Sean told me that the Jet should be here before the end of next week~! Wooooo Hooooo~! So I will have just enough time to get the shop reorganized before it gets here.

And next week will come fast, as I work 12hr shifts Fri thru Mon morning. Then School Tue-Fri next week. So it''ll be here before I know it~! :gar-Bi

Matthew,
I agree with Gary on the purchase choice. I don't want to start a this brand vs that brand but I have the 2 hp 16/42 and flat out love it.I had a problem with the first motor and jet had me a replacement so fast it almost wasn't an inconvience. As far as the grizz goes,it seems that there always has to be some kind of concession in quality or capability to allow the price to be what it is.And as far as 18" bowls vs 16 " bowls, you probably won't turn near as much of the big stuff as you think. And when you get a big piece then slide the head down and turn it off the end.I added some ballast weight under the lower shelf and it just planted that lathe, out of balance, who cares,it does not move.Hope you like it .That's a heck of a deal on the 3520 also.
