Hi guys,
I'm the bluedawg, a longtime bulldawg fan slowly converting to a bluedevil (basketball only) or if you'd rather, Sam from Durham. Anyways, I've found this site invaluable over the past couple of years in projects I've taken on. I got started buying unfinished furniture and finishing it myself as a means to acquire quality furniture at a reasonable price. After building my daughter a play stove/oven, I really caught the bug for sawdust. About that time, my g-father passed away who was a man of many talents including woodworking. Although I hardly knew him, I "inherited" a few things from him, a router, some clamps, and a couple of sanders. Fast forward a year later and I've since acquired a table saw, a router table, a few bits, and a couple of planes. I've built a bookcase, a dress-up chest for my daughter and a strikingly similar toy chest for my son, that is NOT a dress up chest, and a new entertainment center. I'm now building a kitchen table out of ash (40 x 61 3/4") that can extend 48" (or more if I've the inclination to build more leaves). I picked up the lumber from the hardwood store of nc (s2 w/ a straight line rip). What do folks think about their wood? Other places not too far from Durham I should consider? I don't have a planer (just yet), but just picked up a 6" jointer on sale at the HD this past weekend, so I'd still need it surfaced and thickness planed.
Anyways, between this site and others like it and the local library, I would not have thought woodworking was within my means (i.e. I'm more or less internet and book taught + some trials and errors). So thanks to those who take the time to reply to what may seem like such simple questions/dilemnas. Guys like me find this advice invaluable. I post some pix of the table as it nears completion.
