Once again LOML volunteered us for something and I had to whip it together in pretty short notice, like 3 or 4 days. :elvis:

This time it was to make a craft/scrapbooking caddy for our son's preschool fundraiser. I've never built one so I kinda just rough sketched something out and whipped it together mostly with stuff I had on hand. The carcuss is 3/8 and 1/4 BB and the handle assembly is an approx 70-80 year old machine cut tobacco stick. Two of the dividers I dado'd and didn't glue so they could be configured as desired.

This one had a couple of firsts, as well as a few lasts!:gar-Bi If I was to make another one I'd dado for all the dividers and only glue/nail the main center divider so it would be more flexible. Thanks for looking.

Brian that looks great :eusa_clap:eusa_clap:eusa_clap I really like your (your wife's) decorations on the sides. That is something my wife has really been wanting to try. I am assuming they are drawn with a woodburner and then painted inside the burnt lines :eusa_thin
You might consider knocking off the corners of the old tobacco sticks, so no one gets a splinter.

DaveO, thnx. You are correct about the decoration process. The outlines are drawn with pencil and then burned, some things are free handed with the burner and final details are added that way as well. Then it's up to me or her to fill it in. Since my work schedule gives me days off during the week I try to get as much of the coloration/staining done per her directions (like paint by the number!) when the kids aren't around and let her deal with the cool shading and non-standard coloring and finishing touches. Then I get the honor of doing all the top coating, you'll notice I jumped the gun a bit on the side with the stamper and smeared the stain a bit with the poly. I didn't notice it until the next morning when I was taking the pics and then it was too late to attempt a fix.

I contemplated sanding down the corners on the stick but I wasn't happy with the resulting lighter color when I did it on the off cut. I wanted to keep as much of the cured nicotine coloration as I could and as machine cut sticks go this one is one of the better ones and I think the likelyhood of getting a splinter off of it are pretty low. Had I used one of the hand cut sticks I've got it would have probably been a must to knock the corners down.

If your wife wants to give burning a try I can get you the info on the unit we've got as LOML likes the current one better than the 1st one we had. Might be able to let you borrow it for her to try out when we've got some down time if she's interested.

Nice job Brian. Your wife might have signed you up but the kids are the winners. I doubt you put up much of a fight. :wsmile:
