Exterior Shutter Material Selection

I have an abundance of Hard Maple and white cedar in the shop. My house needs new shutters on the front and I'm at a loss for which material to use. I understand the natural characteristics of both woods, but if there is a solid exterior latex on all sides would the material selection matter that much?
I'd rather use maple due to it's hardness...though not particularly rot resistant, and I'm allergic to this cedarhttp://www.ncwoodworker.net/forums/images/smilies/5sigh.gif
Production wood shutters are often pine or Hmdf, why not maple?

Completely for looks. 2 Center raised panel type.

I made some of those out of ERC for the house, I put a primer coat and of latex paint on them. Tacked them to the house with 16d finishing nails. I have not had on lick of problems out of them since, that was several years ago, I like ERC for outdoor use, it's supper easy to work with and pretty much trouble free.

I've developed an allergy to cedar too, so this year I made some replacement shutters from cypress. Works a lot like cedar, without the puffy eyes, sneezing and swelling. Whatcha' think?

eastern red cedar. cypress is a great choice for shutters [operational or not.] light weight, easily worked and rot resistant.
