I am thinking about getting some dovetail jaws for my chuck as I think the chuck makes the most sense for side grain open bowls but I am launching more than I would like to with my straight jaws.
Is the holding power of the dovetail jaws appreciably better? I am assuming that they have to be a little better. I can hardly blame most of these straight tenons for flying the coop the first chance they get.

Thank,

If they are smooth there is a bit more holding power in the almost fully closed position, but much better if they are profiled.

All I have ever used is the dove tail jaws an never launched one and before I got the 4" all I was using was the 2 1/4 an I was turning 12" pieces and up,so I guess what I'm trying to say is go with the dove tail :gar-Bi
