Please vote on if we reopen or leave closed the thread about "made in China" vs local suppliers.

I don't mind saying I voted no. Just for the simple reason that the thread was closed and left in public view and there will be some that just cannot contain themselves once it is reopened. I think we are playing with fire reopening it. What is done is done. Just my opinion.

Yes. Not reopening it because some people might not be able to contain themselves, is doing the same thing that was initially done, and that is anticipating something that may, or may not happen. Noone is capable of knowing what will happen. Moderate after the fact, not before.

Scott, I think that if the thread is reopened it needs to because YOU are comfortable with reopening it.

At the end of the day, I care more about your comfort and contributions as a moderator than whether any single post should be moderated (open or closed).

If you do choose to reopen it, I would suggest that you consider adding a statement that the thread has sparked a good discussion amongst the moderators and boards and helped us to better understand when and when not to moderate.

One thing to consider in the future, if a thread "may" go bad, is rather than closing it for the moderator to make a statement on the thread letting everybody know to please keep their comments within bounds, as the thread has a potential to go off the reservation.

I think it should be reopened, and I believe it was closed for the wrong reason. It was not closed because it was inappropriate or off topic.

Making a comment in a thread that could go bad is not a bad thing, closing a thread because it could go bad is in my book.

I concur 100% with Scott Smith's statement here -- it is your call Scott. I've commented in the discussion thread already, so will add no more here. This is my vote; didn't use the poll.

If the vote is to reopen it, I think we should give the original poster a summary of our discussion and mention that he has given us an opportunity to discuss these types of issues.

We need to reopen it. I will reopen it if no one else will, for one reason more than any other, it is the right thing to do.

I for one can admit when I make a mistake. We are all human.

I have edited and reopened the thread. Here is a copy of the note I send to those who had a post in the thread.

After much discussion the BoD has agreed to repoen this thread with some edits. The edits where not made to correct errors but in an attempt to prevent this thread from becoming politcally charged. The staff knows that previous threads on this topic have escalated to the point where then entire thread had to be deleted. Let hope those kind of post do not arise here. Thank you.

I would like to no what warranted the edits since NOTHING in the thread was inappropriate.

Quite frankly, it ticks me off to edit the thread. Nothing in it was inappropriate. It just didn't meet what you thought was correct. Are you afraid to admit you were wrong in closing the thread so you have to justify it?

I don't get it, and this is the exact same scenario that PO'ed me early this year.

Now, you reopen the thread, delete all of your comments, and say keep it civil. Are you afraid to admit you are wrong or made a mistake to show you are human?

Like I said, it ticks me off.

Scott, if you review this thread on the BOD forum, no where will you see that the BoD agreed to edit the post. Any comments on editing occured on the Moderators and Administrators forum. Doug did say something about editing, but he is the only board member that did so. To have board approval, you would need at least four people recommending edits and it is very clear that was not the case. Being a member of the BoD I would prefer that any statement concerning actions of the board be accurate.

The only thing that the closed post needed, if it was reopened, was a statement that this was the type post that possibly could become political and a request that extra care be taken so that it wouldn't, and that it did, it would then be closed/deleted. This entire thread could have, and should have, been handled differently.
