Dad's Urn

Second turning on my dad's urn. This is way out of my comfort zone. I've turned a bunch of bowls, but never anything like this. But when your mom asks you to do something, you do it.

The inside was still over 12% moisture, so I'm going to let it dry for a few more weeks before I finish the inside. I left the walls just under half an inch so hopefully I don't get any cracks or warping. I also applied sanding sealer to the outside. I'll post pictures when it done.

How were you able to work out what the needed volume is? There are guidelines out there (and maybe here on NCWW) for this, I believe based on the body mass of the deceased.

Yes. I did some research about the size needed. I found a YouTube video that explains the formula. I'll try to find it and post the link.

With that said, I think this is going to be a little small. But it's going to workout. Whatever doesn't fit, we are going to spread at the pond on my parents property.

Rule of thumb is 1 lbs body weight = 1 cubic inch of remains

I made a few hollow forms back in the day and I found if you soak the end grain with CA glue it helps the blank not split. This worked on ambrosia maple and some locust.
