I made this ice cream scoop from a small diameter log of Choke Cherry. The pith is approximately dead center in it, running the length of the handle. the finger grips serve the purpose of ease in use, but more importantly, it cuts through various rings to show more of the grain of the wood. There is no stain on this piece and it was only finished with a couple of layers of minwax tung oil (more 'min' than 'tung'), and then dried with a cloth while still spinning on the lathe. It was first sanded up to a 2000 grit. That is a wire burn at the butt end. The kit was from Rockler, who makes a stainless steel version. The ones from Woodcraft are gold-toned, but their retaining ring does not have the nice little bevel on the end like the Rockler version.

NICE so how did you make that wood round like that? I've not seen a branch shaped quite like that before :confused:

The pith is just off center a little bit. I don't necessarily think this was a branch. (I bought the wood on ebay) Choke Cherry is a small nuisance tree and this piece very well could have been from the trunk of the tree. By putting the finger grooves in it at different depths, it exposed the tree rings differently. The butt end is 1 1/2" in diameter. The pith is only off center by less than 1/4". As far as how I made it round? I used a lathe! :gar-La;
