Make sure it is dry and then stabilize it and finally see what it turns out to be on a lathe. I know, sounds simple but not a simple matter.

Looks like it has some age...I'm an authority... I would debris all the rotten/loose stuff and depending on what's left turn a hollowform. You may need epoxy, depending on what's under the crud.

Most likely cherry. Will require a lot of processing and cleaning up to say the least. Once cleaned up and dried out you will need to do a lot of filling or full casts with it.

A half baked idea, but what if you cut the narrow middle out of it, glue in something else that is contrasting to give you a reasonably consistent diameter, then use what is the left side in your picture as the top and the right side as bottom? I’m sure the bottom will have cracks, but perhaps you could glue in a new bottom with a floating cherry insert or even add a solid cherry circle. Will give this more thought, but that’s the first thing that occurred to me.

It won’t be solid top to bottom, so will be an art piece as opposed to a solid vessel, but I personally prefer that look to filling it if you can.

You could resaw it and make knife scales out of it. They can be colored and voids filled with epoxy. Figured scales fetch a nice price on ebay.
