I used butcher block counter tops for our previous house(a few years ago).I had gutted the kitchen and would have loved putting in granite. However, we knew we would be moving soon and would not make the return. And we had a lot of counter space.I ordered the Maple workbench top from Grizzly.I got the 1.75" Maple. You are limited by the lengths.I think it was 7-8'.It luckily worked in ours.I sealed the end grains with Good Stuff finish, which Grizzly sells. And I used many many many coats of a salad bowl finish, don't remeber the brand.I made a 4" backsplash out of hard maple,it blended perfectly.
I looked at all the cabinet shops and Borgs at the time. And even with all the shipping and man hours of making it a finished countertop,it was the cheapest way to go.And it was a great outcome. We sold our house at a realy bad time in record time...and I still say it was because of that kitchen.
