How to make succesful segments?

My cannon model project inevitably led to a model wagon for the cannonballs ... ... which will soon enough require wheels. The scale model horse drawn vehicle folks frequently use segmented-turning to make the small wagon-wheel rims, using 5 or 6 segments to make the wheels, so cutting...

Non-turned bowl

A segmented bowl in red oak finished with tung oil and wax. This was made by scrollsawing each layer in a nested pattern. The layers were then stacked by rotating each one slightly and relative to the previous layer. The layers were fixed with CA.
