    countertop source?

Is there any alternative source for granite or quartz countertops other than the Home Depot or Lowe's brands? I was hoping to find something at less cost than the $44 - $50 per sq ft range. Anything wholesale available? Thanks. John

    Cantilevered Countertop

My wife wants a cantilevered countertop in her new laundry room to use as a folding table etc. She wants to maximize the space under it, so she doesn't want any legs and wants "low profile" supports. Anyone got suggestions or better yet, pictures of some ideas for supporting this thing? I am...

    Kitchen Countertop Progress

Gees, planing this stuff by hand is tough! At least I am getting lots of practice sharpening the irons. I decided to go with edge grain instead of face grain for the section around the sink. That should help with the movement problem we were discussing in another thread. It isn't as pretty...

    Countertop Laminate

Where can you buy countertop laminate? I have not seen it at the BORGs. I want to laminate plywood that will be used for jigs and table saw inserts to make them slicker. Thanks.

    Maple Butcher Block Countertop

I finished the butcher block counter top today. I ran into all kinds of problems and it took much longer than I thought it would. I had glue showing when I stained the backsplash. It didn't show up until I stained it. So I took it off, sanded it again and put it back on. When I put it back...

    Kitchen Countertop Advice

My double dresser is done except for final scraping and then staining. I am not a fan of staining - the bull in the china shop syndrome... My next project is to make countertops for our kitchen. I have been doing lots of reading on the web. I am thinking about doing mostly end grain with...

    Cutting Laminate Countertop?

I have a couple countertops I need to install and they will have to be cut to length. Do I need to buy one of the specialty laminate blades. I'll be using an older circular saw. My plan is to tape the laminate and cut upside down. I also have a backsplash to deal with. Any advise will be...

BCT22 - Countertop with High Gloss Finish

The final coat of Rockhard Tabletop Varnish with its high gloss look. While it looks great, the surface was contaminated with small bits of hardened varnish from a less-than-clean brush. And the customer decided they wanted a satin finish versus this high gloss.

    BCT24 - Satin Finish Top

The client wanted the varnish rubbed out to a Satin Finish -- three hours of careful sanding to remove the "nits" with 320 grit followed by 400, 600 and then 800 grit. Compare with BCT

The countertop sits right behind the kitchen sink and its stone backsplash. I sealed the 1/8" gap between the backsplash and the Bubinga with clear silicone caulk.

BCT20 - View from Dining Room

Here's a view from the Dining Room looking toward the countertop and the kitchen. The reflection off the drywall below the countertop is from Lexan I installed to protect the wall from being scuffed by careless feet sitting on stools...

    BCT18 - Moment of Truth!

My key issue was getting the 3 angle supports at the right height and coplanar with each other and the top of the stub wall (it was -- thanks to carefull use of a 4' level when installing the vertical members!). Less than 1/16" error which was taken up with a bed of clear silicone caulk on...

    BCT17 - Bracket Closeup

The angle piece tenons were glued and the top support dovetail pin lowered into the tail cut into the vertical. When seated, the brackets were at a perfect 90º angle and the tops flush with the top stud in the stub wall. I drilled holes into the far side of the horizontal and vertical members...

Unique Countertop Commission - WIP w/ pics

I have been asked by friends of the people for whom I built the Wine Cellar Project last October (see pics in my Photo Gallery) to build a special Countertop/Bar in their new home under construction in the suburbs of Hendersonville. Last month, I picked up the materials from Steve Wall Lumber --...

    Countertop question

What are the thoughts of using self sticking floor tiles for a countertop? Marine plywood could be used around the sink because of possible water issues. The back splash and front edge could be hardwood to match the cabinets. I know you guys will think this idea is crazy but if you can't be...
