Hello guys and gals. When the BOD met this past weekend, we discussed the wood sales policies and pretty much agreed to no longer allow wood sales in the classifieds.

Doug Robinson wrote the below that he was going to post to the general membership, and following that is the amended classified policy. We are posting here to get your comments, feedback, and suggestions before we move forward.

All comments and suggestions appreciated.

In order to be equitable to all members, the BoD has determined that ads to sell wood will now only be permited in the wood forum, and will no longer be allowed in the classifieds. There will not be restrictions on the ads in the wood forum as to commercial seller/private seller. We appreciate your consideration of this change and welcome comments via PM to the BoD.

This is a first draft.

---------------------------------Classified Policy

Classified Ads Policy
Clarified 1/2010

Members of the website with at least five posts may place advertisements in the Classified Section of the website. Ads must be placed in an appropriate category and are limited to woodworking-related items or services that are For Sale, or Wanted or are offered Free to fellow members. Ads may not contain links to off-site auction sites or public sales websites, but may include links to personal or reference websites related to the item in the Ad (e.g., manufacturer). Pictures are encouraged within the Ad and links to a member photo gallery on www.ncwoodworker.net or elsewhere are permitted.

Ad content must relate to woodworking, tools, accessories for woodworking equipment or workshop items. Members may use the Classified Section for one-time sale of woodworking items they make, but may not market production items for profit. Ads for items may be renewed (bumped) twice; if an item does not sell, the originator should consider reducing price before renewing the Ad. Commercial Ads or Services for Hire are not allowed in Classifieds, but certain "Special Sales" or Announcements may be placed as outlined below. Any Ads that do not meet these criteria may only be posted with the express permission of a Staff member (who shall be named in the Ad), or the Ad will be moderated or deleted. Classified Ads are for members only; guests may browse Ads, but do not see any Member contact information.

Commercial Postings

Commercial firms or Members wanting to place Banner or Sidebar Ads should use the Contact Us link for options available. For profit Members selling lumber, turning woods or other unfinished raw wood products may post a thread in the Wood Forum as long as the following criteria are met: (1) The offering is exclusively for NC Woodworker members; (2) Pricing should be lower than normal sales at their regular place of business; and (3) A discount to members and/or a nominal donation to NC Woodworker, Inc. per $100 in total sales is included in the offering. All added costs such as sales tax or shipping and handling should be clearly spelled out. "Special Sales" shall be limited to once per Commercial Member per month. No finished products may be offered. NC Woodworker, Inc. does not endorse or warrant any products offered and retains the right to remove any ads.

Commercial Members may post notice of woodworking events or classes for woodworkers in the User Announcement Forum.

Wood Sales

Sales of wood and wood products not limited to but including lumber, plywood, MDF, particle board, pen blanks, turning blanks, etc are not allowed in the classified ads. Commercial and private listings for wood sales are allowed in the Wood Forums.

I'm assuming this policy will not impact sawyers for hire except when they are selling their own wood. Their services will still be listed in the Member Commerce sites links?

That would be my understanding as well. If you want to sell wood, you post it in the wood forum. Sawyers for hire are stil in the commerce sites links so no change there.

Looks good. It may not hurt to explain why - that we have private sellers who need shop space, semi-commercial sawyers who bring the occasional load of wood, professional sawmills, and woodworking stores that sell lumber. And that to avoid confusion on what goes where, and keep everything equitable, all wood sales go in the wood forum. Someone is bound to ask, so getting the message out there up front would help with that.

Note that this is not about "justifying" the policy...just explaining it.

Sounds great! This will really help to clarify things.

Right now, one can create an Ad if they are looking for wood. Might want to add a bit about our "Where Can I Find, Buy, or Sell" forum for that need.

In reading the Ad Policy, may wish to edit this line to remove reference to wood:

Ad content must relate to woodworking, tools, wood and wood products, accessories for woodworking equipment or workshop items.

From past "experiences", I'd suggest mentioning of sheet goods or spell out plywood, MDF and particle board. And, just to be nit picky, upper case "W" for Wood forum :)

I'll start a Staff ToDo for some changes we'd need to make to the Categories in the Classified Settings to support this policy change.

Thanks!
Jim
