Anyone know what this is? I got a decent amount of shorter boards that were being thrown away at a local hardwood plant. It isn’t as hard as oak, not as soft as pine. Maybe somewhere in between the two.

I don’t have a useable plane at the moment. Good to know for next time though.
how about a sharp chisel or even a knife, just to get a clean cut in the endgrain...

face grain looks similar to beech, but not absolutely sure.
