I've got an idea for a project that would need a few small tree stumps/bells. Maybe max 10" diameter at the widest point, and smaller would be fine too. Not much preference on species, but ideally would be something that doesn't move/check excessively, looks decent in cross section, and has something of a pronounced taper to the bell. Redbud? mulberry?

Dry of course preferred, but doubt I'll find any. I suppose these could be small enough to fit in the kitchen oven...

Not sure what you're looking for but Klingspor has cyprus knees for sale in their woodcarving section. They are somewhat bell shaped.

hmmm. Might work. Any idea on what they charge for those sorts of things?

I'm half tempted to ask some of the local sawyers. Might be able to find something that would otherwise get tossed.

Hadn't paid much attention to the prices - they vary in size and price I'm sure. Give them a call before you venture all the way across town. Local Sawyers may indeed be a source - some won't touch stumps because of the dirt and rocks in them - if they have them at all.
