Need advice on finish for wooden coasters. Looking for waterproof and heat-resistant properties.
Thanks.

Waterproof and heat resistant...use a 2 part catalytic finish like what is put on commercial wood bar tops. Apply 2-3 coats. I don't have a particular brand to recommend; maybe someone else does. Be sure to test on a scrap to see how the color and grain pop change.

An alternative is to treat them like cutting boards. Almost any brand of tung oil, cooking oil, or formulated cutting board oil will do. Clean the coasters and reapply oil every year or two.

Cooking oil can go bad and should not be used as a finish.
Berta--Thanks for correcting me. So, if you're going to use any type of oil based finish, stick to something meant for cutting boards. From other posts on this thread I like the idea of using an oil based something with wax on top of it, but I don't know how the wax would stand up to heat.

Good morning Bob,

I have used water-based poly, oil-based poly, and the latest batch I used Tried & True. The last batch is still in the shop, but I think I like T&T better (and I had it on hand).

Hope this helps,

Regards,

Rick
