I recently undertook a cedar bench project, one of my more ambitious undertakings, and thought I'd share the results. I started with rough sawn 2X6 boards obtained from a sawyer nearby (Brandon Smith). The design is based on one I bought but I made several changes to improve comfort (both my wife and I are on the shorter side) and durability. All of the structural joints include a short mortise/tenon and are glued with Titebond-III. There are also long screws into the endgrain of each tenon. I considered several finish options including Cabots Australian Timber Oil which I actually tested but ultimately did not like for this application. It will be left unfinished. I have a detailed SketchUp model I will share if anyone is interested.
