What would be the advantage of the SS vs Al model? Easier to make a accurate pencil mark due to thinner SS?

Not sure...AL is softer and will ding and dent easier it abused.

Have you priced out some of the Starrett rulers and layout tools? For general WW is a $100 ruler any better then a $12 ruler? I guess it is up to the user. After all WW does not require micron tolerances.
