Howdy NCWWW's,

Has anyone ever tried to make a table saw table out of mdf, particle board or plywood?

I got the idea while looking at my RAS table, which is particle board.

Lets just say, for the sake of discussion, that you got a tablesaw that didn't have a cast iron table.

I exhausted my ideas for searches on google, so I'm throwing it out there.

I used to have a small 9" tablesaw with an expanded MDF frame around it. It had the old style Delta fence on it and worked pretty well. The down side was the fence rails were not straight due to I believe not using washers and spacers correctly. Otherwise, it worked pretty well.

I also liked the table saw workstation norm abhrams made.

I'm thinking I'm going to try some countertop cuttoffs.

Sure are a lot of clever folk out there!

Jim, if you are seriously considering making your own tablesaw, I think
you would be better advised to build it out of some good stable plywood
maybe two plies laminated together (2) 1/2" pieces would be more stable
and stronger. I would not use mdf or particle board after what I saw
the other day. It was a commercial made portable/folding top tablesaw
made of mdf. That stuff was a disaster! It was a single layer of 3/4"
mdf with a splitter/bladeguard combo and two light guage steel (cheap)
miter guage tracks installed and this piece of junk had evidentally gotten wet at some time and started to bow up badly at the edges like a bowl!

As I said it was a portable /fold up model built on a framework that closely resembled a B&D workmate type table but only a lot cheaper made!
In my opinion...this thing was a disaster waiting to happen for somebody
who might buy it....it was for sale at a thrift store for $ 9.99 imagine that? If you do use plywood...laminate the sheets together well, after drying for a couple of days, seal all edges and surfaces really well with
a good sealer....it will prevent the above description from happening to yours. Hope this helps........eezlock
