ROS with mesh abrasives - anyone use an intermediate pad?

There's has been a recent discussion regarding the sandpaper testing video and the 3M mesh type abrasives. My question relates to all mesh type abrasives.

Does anyone use an intermediate pad on the ROS for mesh type abrasives pieces ? If so, why? What type? (hard, soft? in which situation?).
Any specific recommendations for product?

I am mostly interested in using these for my 6" ROS that I use for large flat surfaces, not the lighter 5" sander that I use for small areas (i.e. tapered table legs).

I can't recall the source of the info, but seem to recall the advice to use this type of pad with mesh type abrasives b/c the hook and loop pad of the sander loses effectiveness. Having experienced the 'loss of hold-effectiveness' (for other reasons) and having replaced the pad on my Festool sander once, I can say that this is not 'just another consideration.' The cost of the pad and especially the inconvenience (of a sander that no longer holds on to the discs) are real factors.
