Question about Danish Oil Finish on "punky" Wood

I have decided to work with Watco Danish Oil Finish for my wood pieces. I work with heavily spalted wood ( some pretty punky). I have found that some of the pieces soak up a lot of the oil (like a sponge).... my question is... do I keep applying the finish until it no longer absorbs... or just apply a reasonable amount in 5 to 10 minutes and do this daily for a few days (which is what I' doing). I then follow this with a wet sanding (with danish oil finish). btw - these pieces just hang on the wall - so no heavy use - but trying to get a little bit more "life" back into the wood. Thanks in advance for any opinions
