or- We use no wood before its time

The discussion of board storage made me think of this project from a few weeks ago.
It started with replacing some boards in my deck.
I figured I could salvage some usable wood from the old ones, which combined with the cut offs from the new one would yield a base for my grill.
That was the plan.

As these things go, there really was only about 4’ of useful salvage and a bunch of 25” cut-offs.
I started figuring what I could do with that and had a great idea if only I had another longish piece.
So I dove into the wood storage and discovered some nice redwood I salvaged from a picnic table my dad bought somewhere prior to 1964.
I can recall him telling me, “this is real redwood. It will last a long time.”. It surely has.

Into the shop and out comes this solution to my grill stand.
It’s not what I set out to do, but I like it.

Debating whether to stain the legs to match or complement the deck color.

FWIW the umbrella bracket is also from the cut offs

Forgot to mention the little brackets supporting the outer ends of the top are cypress left over from some bee hives I built 5-10 years ago

I see a lot of recycling going on in just a few square feet. Even the old umbrella stand has a job! Great job.
