You can do either or, the last one I put together the bookcase was manufactured in a custom cabinet shop. I had to reinforce the case to take being hung on two pin hinges. These hinges were designed to be used this way, the case needed to be prepared for the application.

It made for an interesting day!

I've installed one before using just the hinge kit. I didn't think it was too bad, but it was not nearly as clean as Graywolf's. It was just an entry to a space under a stairwell with a book case exterior.
