Is there something better than chalk for marking pieces of wood? I have always used chalk, but it invariably seems to get wiped off during handling. I don't like pencil because it can impress the wood fibers and is hard to see on dark wood. I can't see using ink of any type. What about grease pencil? Would that get into the grain and affect finish?

I mis-drilled my last project because of losing my reference marks.

Thanks.

Go to your local artsy-craftsy store and look over their pencil selection. They have some white pencils which are perfect for darker woods. No residue, easy to sand out. Works great across the grain, but it can be a bit difficult to draw a line that is parallel to the grain fibers.

I might suggest seamstress chalk. It's not as soft as reg. chalk and is a bit more oily so it stays on better. It's safe for fabric so I'd bet it would work well on wood. Some drug stores will have it in the "notions" isle.
