Making the perfect wine barrel

One day, when the shop is not on overload this is a project in the back of my mind.

Don’t know how the old timers did it, but it seems pretty complicated and for perfection impossible to do without some form of CNC.

The challenge seems to be making the staves.

For a perfect circular barrel, the staves outer convex shape will have a continuously changing radius from the edge of the barrel to the center of the barrel. Then there are the angles which have to be milled on the sides.

Sounds like a really nice challenge.

Does sound like a great project. Just a suggestion, you might fill it with bourbon

There are some good videos online of professional barrel makers - not so much the stave dimension/production but rather forcing and holding the staves together

Making a white oak wine or beer barrel for liquids is not easy. You can buy a white oak barrel easier than making one. The staves are not easy to make either.
