Who hasn't found themselves out in the shop, at 2:18am in dire need of a dowel?

What to do?

Sure, I always intended to get or make one of those spiffy dowel plates. But I don't think any stores are open at 2:18 am.

Whats a woodworker to do?

Washers, my friends, washers.

This isn't great, but it falls into what I like to call, good enough.

Split some dowel stock, likely of an oak variety.

Be sure to get close to your final diameter, this is not, let me repeat not going to work well removing much material.

From there, the pictures should be self explanatory. Remember to wail on it with a big hammer and as few blows as possible. It comes out less useful if you go easy on it.

For this, I used one washer the diameter I needed and two larger to provide support.

Jim

I haven't :gar-Bi I got plug cutters for my drill press

Thats a pretty neat method. From what I've seen with washers tho, is that they are never the same size, even from the same package. Not sure if the inner diameter is manufactured to better tolerances.
