How would you sand this?

A friend of mine is restoring some furniture and is having some trouble getting into the grooves. He tried using sanding cord but it was not small enough.

Refinishing is one of my least favorite projects! Can't tell by your pictures, but is it possible to mount any of these pieces on a lathe?

I would use stripper and a toothbrush as much as possible, and avoid sanding as it removes the crisp edges of the wood. You might also find some Dremel (rotorary tool) accessories - brushes, etcetera, to reach into the tight area.

You might try riffler, triangular, and round files if stripper and a brush don't work.
