Am looking to make a table similar to this one http://sethrolland.com/gallery/tables/sunburst.html

Wondering two things: a) how is the top attached to the legs, or rather what would be a good way to do so?

b) in a sunburst pattern like that, do the ends of the boards split out over time? Is there a different glue used in this case?

I am thinking of laminating some thin pieces for a different leg pattern, but basically the same idea. Any thoughts?

I would guess that there is a sub-top that the legs are attached to via M&T, dowels or sliding DTs. And then the main top is attached to that sub-top in a way that allows movement. The sunburst lamination is no different than the construction of a strip cutting board, no special glue is needed regular wood glue will do fine. I would suspect that a plastic resin glue was probably used for it's longer open time and less chance of glue-line creep.
